How many staves to put on a page
The stave count is the only real decision, and it is a trade between room and reach. Ten to twelve staves is the general purpose choice and roughly what commercial manuscript paper uses. Drop to eight or fewer for beginners, for anything with lyrics underneath, or for a part you expect to mark up: the staff lines get further apart, so noteheads and stems stay legible and there is space above and below for dynamics and fingering. Push to fourteen or sixteen when you are drafting a long piece and want fewer page turns, or when you are writing short exercises rather than performance material. For piano you effectively halve the count, because each system takes two staves.
