Spacing and colour, the two decisions that matter
5 mm is the bullet journal standard and the spacing every layout tutorial assumes, so pick it if you are copying spreads from elsewhere. Move to 7 mm if your handwriting is large: at 5 mm you end up writing across two rows and the dots stop helping. For colour, the honest advice is to go lighter than feels right on screen. Dots that look faint on a bright monitor print noticeably darker, and the whole appeal of dot grid is that the page reads as blank once you have filled it. Light grey also has a practical benefit: it disappears in a scan or a phone photo, so a page you share shows your work rather than the grid.
How to set up a page on dot grid paper
Dot grid rewards a minute of counting before the pen goes down. These steps work for any spread, from a weekly log to a tracker.
- Count the dots first. Count the dots across the top row and down the side before you draw anything. Plan every box in whole dots, so a spread that needs 7 columns gets a width the dot count divides into.
- Rule from dot to dot. Use the dots as corners and rule boxes with a fine pen and a short ruler. Lines that start and end on a dot look neat even when they are hand drawn.
- Leave one dot as a gutter. Keep one empty dot between neighbouring boxes. It separates sections cleanly without wasting space.
- Size the lettering to the grid. Write body text one row high, with each line resting on a row of dots. Make headings two rows high, which is 10 mm at the standard 5 mm spacing.
Printing tips
- Check the scale: at 5 mm spacing, 10 gaps between dots should measure 50 mm. Anything shorter means Fit to page is still switched on.
- Choose a lighter dot colour than looks right on screen. Dots print darker than they appear on a bright monitor.
- Ordinary 80 gsm copy paper is fine for ballpoint and gel pens. For markers or fountain pens, heavier paper of 100 gsm or more shows less ink through the back.

5 mm is the classic bullet journal spacing. Choose a wider spacing for larger handwriting or a tighter one to fit more detail.
Can I change the dot color?
Yes. A light grey keeps the dots subtle so they disappear once your page fills up. You can also pick a warmer tone to match your notebook.
Do the dots print at true 5 mm spacing?
Yes at 100 percent scale. That matters more here than on most paper, because bullet journal layouts are counted in dots: a 24 dot wide spread only works if the dots are the spacing you planned around.
Will it fit an A5 notebook?
Print at A4 or Letter and cut or fold to A5, rather than scaling to A5 in the print dialog. Scaling would shrink the dot spacing along with the page and leave you with a 3.5 mm grid.
How big are the dots?
0.5 mm across. Large enough to see at arm's length, small enough that they read as points rather than a texture.
