Guide lines that teach good letters
The dashed midline is the secret. It shows exactly where the body of a lowercase letter should stop, so an a, an e, and an o all end up the same height, while ascenders on letters like b and h reach the top line. That structure builds neat, even handwriting far faster than a blank page.
How to use it
- Set the line height. Choose the distance between baselines in millimetres, from 10 mm for confident writers up to 26 mm for the youngest.
- Pick the page size and orientation. A4 or Letter, portrait or landscape, drawn for the sheet rather than scaled to it.
- Choose a line colour. A light grey keeps the guides quiet next to a pencil line.
- Download and print at 100 percent. Press Download PDF and print with scaling set to 100 percent so the line height stays true.
Choosing a line height
- Start tall, around 18 to 20 mm, for young children just forming letters.
- Reduce the height as control improves, down toward normal writing size.
- Older writers rebuilding neat script can start near 12 to 14 mm.
Warm up with whole rows. Practising one tricky letter across a full row builds muscle memory better than a single attempt.

What are the three lines for?

What line height should I pick for a young child?

Yes. The midline works as an x-height guide for both, and a taller line height gives room for the loops and flourishes that cursive and calligraphy need.
