What graph paper is good for
Math and plotting
Plot coordinates, graph equations, and keep long division neatly aligned. A 5 mm grid is the classic choice for schoolwork.
Design and floor plans
Assign a scale, such as one square equals half a metre, and sketch rooms, gardens, or layouts with consistent proportions.
Pixel and cross stitch art
Each square becomes a pixel or a stitch. A finer grid gives you more detail per sheet for careful, countable designs.
Choosing a grid size, with the trade-off spelled out
5 mm is the default because a digit fits inside one square and a page still holds a usable coordinate range. Go to 10 mm when the page is going to be read from a distance or annotated heavily, and accept that you get a quarter of the squares. Go to 2 or 3 mm for pixel art, cross stitch charts and dense circuit layouts, where you want detail and are not writing inside the cells. The one thing to avoid is picking a grid size that does not divide neatly into the scale you are drawing at: one square to half a metre works, one square to 37 cm does not.

Frequently asked questions
Is this graph paper PDF true to scale?
Yes. The grid is measured in millimetres. Print at 100 percent scale, with page scaling turned off, and each square measures exactly the size you chose.
What grid size should I pick?
5 mm is the most common all purpose size. Use 10 mm for large, easy to read squares, or 2 mm to 3 mm for detailed drawing and pixel work.
Does the grid line up with a ruler?
It does, at 100 percent scale. The grid is drawn in millimetres, so at 5 mm spacing twenty squares measure exactly 100 mm on a ruler. Switch the scale ruler on before downloading if you want to check the print itself.
Should I choose A4 or Letter?
Choose whichever is in your printer. At a 5 mm grid an A4 sheet holds a taller grid and a Letter sheet a slightly wider one, and neither is scaled to fit the other.
Can I print it in a colour other than grey?
Yes, the line colour takes any value. Light grey is the default because it stays behind pencil work and still shows up when printing in greyscale or draft mode.
Am I allowed to hand these out or sell work made on them?
